The “Dancing Dentists”

Season 1′s Reigning Champions:

Brian Brunacini, DDS, and Jenny Fultz Brunacini, DDS

Brian and Jenny with trophy

“The idea of performing in front of people for charity seemed like a fun, yet very scary thought. Even though there were a lot of missteps during our practices, learning a dance routine was extremely rewarding and a lot of fun, especially knowing that lots of people could benefit from it. All the time and energy put into rehearsing and planning for the event still could not prepare us for the excitement and positive energy that Dancing with the Dentists provided. It was definitely nice and exciting to win the trophy together, but the truly rewarding part was seeing how everything and everyone came together for two worthy local charities.”

Season 2′s Dancing Dentists:

Jerry Shuman, DMD, MS, and Setareh Razzaghi, DDS, MS

2015september23-razzaghifamily-1077 copyDr. Jerry Shuman is an orthodontist who is lucky to work with his wife, Dr. Razzaghi, and their partner, Dr. Stegemann: the trio at Maine Orthodontics. He graduated from Harvard University and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, with an orthodontic degree from the University of Michigan. He is the current President of the Maine Association of Orthodontists and past President of the Greater Portland Dental Society. He and his wife are excited to support the Dental Lifeline Network of Maine and the Root Cellar, and have this opportunity to embarrass themselves publicly. His theater directors in college told him he couldn’t dance, so he relishes the chance to prove them wrong. As a bonus, the rehearsals have been great date nights!

Dr. Razzaghi was born in Tehran, Iran, where she lived prior to moving to San Diego at age 15. She attended high school and college in San Diego. She worked as a molecular biologist for 3 years, and then attended the University of Southern California Dental School in Los Angeles. Setareh then began her residency at the University of Washington’s Graduate Orthodontic Program. While in Seattle, she participated in  the annual national orthodontic residents conference, where she met Jerry Shuman, a resident at the University of Michigan. Fast forward 10 years: Setareh is now living in Portland, Maine, married to love of her life, with two beautiful sons. Setareh has the pleasure of working with her husband, Dr. Shuman, as well as Dr. Tom Stegemann at Maine Orthodontics. She feels good to be part of something that helps others, and enjoys the time it has afforded her and her husband to spend time as a couple.

Michele Shems, DMD, PA, and Peter Then, DMD

Michele Shems copyPeter ThenAfter being inspired by her own orthodontist as an adolescent, Dr. Michele Shems decided to make specializing in orthodontia her career goal. She first earned a Bachelor of Arts in history while meeting the pre-med criteria at University of Vermont. Then Dr. Shems enrolled in Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She not only completed her graduate degree in dental medicine, but took it a step further, to complete another two years of training specifically tailored for a career as a specialist in orthodontics. After successfully completing major exams and preparing cases over the course of a required ten years, Dr. Shems became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Today, as a proud member of the community, a mother of three and orthodontist, Dr. Shems approaches each case with careful evaluation. She stays abreast with up-and-coming research, treatment recommendations and modalities, with a tendency to be much more conservative than most. Dr. Shems takes great pride in providing excellent care to each patient, while making sure they enjoy their time in our office. Alongside her staff, she constantly strives to be a visit to which her patients look forward on their calendar, not one that is simply a “to-do.”

Dr. Peter Then has been in private practice limited to periodontics and dental implants since 1995. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a member of several dental societies, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the International Team of Oral Implantology. Dr. Then’s primary interest in private practice focuses on minimally invasive surgery and interdisciplinary treatment concepts to achieve optimal treatment results in the area of perio-prosthetics and implantology. Dr. Then graduated from the University of Frankfurt School of Medicine, and Boston University School of Dental Medicine. He received his Certificate for Graduate Training in Periodontology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and received his doctorate degree from the University of Frankfurt School of Medicine. In 2003, Dr. Then founded the Casco Bay Study Club, an affiliate of the Seattle Study Club.

Gary Creisher, DDS and Rachael Creisher, CDA

20151010_201228Dr. Gary Creisher practices pediatric dentistry to support his farming habit. He raises cows, pigs, chickens, and children (seven!). When he’s not refurbishing antique jeeps, he harvests potatoes and honey. His previous dancing experience includes ballroom dance lessons with his lovely wife of 37 years, Betsy. Gary is the past president of the Maine Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the current VP of the Maine Dental Association. He is excited to be participating in Dancing With the Dentists and the wonderful charities that it supports.

After working as a dental assistant for a few years at her father’s practice in Kennebunk, Rachael Creisher knew that dentistry was the career she wanted to pursue. She was lucky enough to be accepted into UNE’s inaugural class at their new dental school. In addition to studying, her hobbies include rollerblading, motorcycling around town, gardening, and renovating her home in South Portland. She has two handsome boys, a fabulous husband, and a HUGE cuddly dog. Their favorite weekend activity is getting Scratch bagels and coffee then going for a walk on Willard Beach. She’s looking forward to being a part of this super fun event that supports some great charities. She doesn’t have any dancing experience other than a few ballet lessons as a little girl, but with some hard work, she’s sure she’ll be a Star!
